Deschutes Fly Fishing Trips PDF Print E-mail

The Deschutes River forms on the eastern slopes of Oregon's Cascade Mountain range and flows northward into the Columbia River. The river was named Rivere des Chutes, French for the River of the Falls, during the fur trading period in the 1800's. It provided a major route to and from the Columbia for Native Americans and later pioneers on the Oregon trail. The river proved to be a major obstacle for the immigrants on the Oregon Trail. Their major crossing point was near the mouth, where the remains of the trail leading up to the top of the bluff is still visible.

The Deschutes is world renowned for its fly fishing. The even flows that characterize the Lower Deschutes enhance a riparian zone that shelters an incredible array of insect life and in turn feed a unique strain of native trout, commonly called Deschutes Redsides. These trout, which average 13 to 18 inches are heavy solid fish, and are noticeably stronger than trout who do not have to cope with life in such a big, powerful river. Boasting more than 2,500 fish per mile, the Deschutes is one of the best catch and release fisheries in the world. The regulations require that an angler must wade to fish, (no fishing from a floating device), allows only 2 fish between 10 and 13 inches to be kept and require single barbless hooks on artificial lures. With these rules in effect we see the fishing improve every year.

For the past 30 years we have been offering 3 day/2 night float fly fishing trips on a 35 mile stretch of river between Trout Creek and Maupin. We use drift boats with 2 guests per boat.

Call us to reserve your trip for the ultimate in world class fly fishing!
